Henri Matisse, Henri Emile Benoit Palen, was a French artist.

In the beginning he was very much influenced and inspired by the works of the artists Édouard Manet, Paul Signac, Paul Cézanne. He soon became the leader of the painters called fauvists. In 1901 he participated in an exhibition and in 1904 he had his first solo exhibition. When he moved south including the French Riviera, he met André Derain. His painting evolved and the paintings between 1906 and 1917 belongs to the best works ever. After that he settled permanently in Nice in 1921 his art became more decorative and a little less intense.

Swedish artist and author Carl Palme in 1908 took the initiative for the formation of the Académie Matisse in Paris, where among 40 Swedish students were educated in Matisse's management. Sigrid Hjertén, Isaac Grünewald, Edward Hald and Einar Jolin was included in the student crowd.
